Kindergarteners began the year by viewing images of Monet’s gardens and the paintings he produced there. Students used watercolor crayons and tissue paper to resemble water lilies floating in the pond. They used paper straws to create the Japanese footbridge, then painted and printed the reflection in the water. Next, the class explored color mixing. Using only primary colors, each student successfully mixed all the colors in the rainbow before creating a color wheel. They used these colors to paint a variety of skies that reflect all weather conditions, and later added birch trees to their composition. Students went on to practice clay techniques such as rolling and pinching. They sculpted pumpkin pinch pots and reviewed the process of firing and glazing clay. After reading the book, Bats At The Beach, by Brian Lies, kindergarteners examined the physical qualities of bats and went on to illustrate and share their own version of the book. Finally, students experimented with printmaking using gelli printing plates, texture tools, natural objects and stencils..
