Third graders began the year by reviewing the elements of art. They focused on lines that show movement, then created a composition of compressed and contrasting lines. They also explored the art of Zentangle as a way to relax, and improve concentration. The class went on to explore the element of value. Students began this lesson by making a value chart which served as a reference as they sketched castles with charcoal. They demonstrated how shading and applying value can give the illusion of space and depth. Various techniques were used to imply texture and give the castles a realistic appearance. As Halloween approached, students created original and festive ghosts using cardboard, wire, and cheesecloth saturated in liquid starch. When the forms were dry, the armature was removed to reveal a ghostly form. Imaginations took over as they added the finishing touches to make . Next, the class was inspired by the presentation and demonstration, The Dancing Chickens. Students sculpted animals with clay then painted them with bright colored glazes to resemble the designs and patterns of the Oaxaca woodcarvings. Finally, as third graders discovered the important role of Monarch butterflies in Mexican culture, they studied the colors and patterns of their wings before recreating the intricate design with paint on canvas shapes.
