Fourth graders began the year by observing how line is used to describe form. They also explored the art of Zentangle as a way to relax, and improve concentration. They practiced a variety of techniques, then created a pen and ink drawing of a whaling ship in connection with their social studies unit. Students went on to explore the art of scrimshaw by forming whale’s teeth in clay and incising whaling related images, then adding ink to reveal the images in contrast. The students also made game pieces from recycled materials for their whaling game boards. Our next project introduced the artist Edvard Munch and the style of expressionism. Students chose an image to illustrate that would evoke a strong emotion in its viewers. They included a photo of themselves as well. Finally, students sculpted Native American storytellers with terracotta clay. These figures show how stories and legends are passed down through generations, through the art of storytelling.
